Sun Moon Lake Scenic Area is 9,000 hectares and is located in Nantou County. The town of Yuchih lies to the north, Shuieshe Mountain to the east and Shueili Township to the south.

Mountains in this area rise from between 600 and 2,000 meters. The highest peaks are found in the eastern section and the ridges gradually descend into foothills and on to fast flowing rivers and flatlands in the west.

High annual rainfall, humid climate and moderate temperatures give rise to a diverse ecosystem. You find a wide array of insect and bird species. Beetles, dragonflies, swallowtail butterflies, bees, cicadas and fireflies inhabit the forests around the lake. The black-winged firefly makes its appearance from late April to early May. The "mountain firefly" can be seen from October to November. Bird-lovers will relish seeing the little egret, black-crowned night heron, kingfisher,

white breasted water hen, crested serpent eagle, Muller's barbet and Taiwan hill partridge. Between autumn and springtime, migratory birds stop to rest in the area.

The waters of the lake teem with grass shrimp, silver, mud and common carp, the chilifish and the aruzay (president fish). At dusk, you can hear the sound of the amphibians: Moltreche's green tree frog, Mientien tree frog and the Eiffinger's tree frog.
